Gold & Silver
The majority of the coins we offer are produced by The Royal Mint, largely thanks to the valuable tax benefits they offer UK residents.
Why we lead with Royal Mint coins
As official legal tender, Royal Mint bullion coins such as the Sovereign and Britannia are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Any profit made when you come to sell is free of CGT, which is a benefit you do not get with gold bars or many other investments.
That single difference is why most of our clients start here.
Gold and Silver Britannia Coins
One of the UK's most recognised ways to own physical gold and silver.
Britannias are British precious metal coins produced by The Royal Mint. Modern Gold Britannias are struck in 999.9 fine gold, while modern Silver Britannias are struck in 999 fine silver.
The Britannia was first introduced as a gold bullion coin in 1987 and is now recognised by investors and collectors worldwide. The silver version followed in 1997. Today's coins combine British heritage with modern bullion standards.
Since 2021, Britannia coins have carried advanced security features, including surface animation, micro-text and a latent image.
Understanding Britannia sizes
Gold and silver are measured in troy ounces. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1 grams. Britannias are available in a range of sizes, depending on the metal and the individual coin issue.
| Size | Approximate weight |
|---|---|
| 1/10 oz | 3.11g |
| 1/4 oz | 7.78g |
| 1/3 oz | 10.4g |
| 1/2 oz | 15.55g |
| 1 oz | 31.1g |
Gold Sovereign Coins
The Gold Sovereign is one of Britain’s most recognised gold coins, combining more than 200 years of heritage with a well-established international market.
The modern Sovereign was introduced in 1817, featuring Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous depiction of St George and the dragon. While alternative designs have appeared for significant occasions, Pistrucci’s design remains synonymous with the Sovereign today.
Unlike modern Gold Britannias, which are struck in 24-carat gold, Sovereigns are traditionally struck in 22-carat gold (916.7 fineness).
This means that 91.67% of the coin is pure gold, with the remaining alloy providing additional strength and durability. The amount of pure gold within each Sovereign remains precisely defined.
Why Gold Sovereigns?
22 carat investment grade gold
A range of sizes and entry points
More than 200 years of British coinage heritage
An established international market
UK legal tender status
Capital Gains Tax exemption for UK residents
VAT exemption on qualifying investment gold
Their compact size, recognised design and strong secondary market have made Sovereigns a longstanding choice for anyone buying physical gold.
Which one is right for you?
Both are Royal Mint legal tender and both are CGT exempt for UK residents. The practical difference comes down to purity and flexibility.
Choose a Britannia if you want 24 carat gold or fine silver, and the widest choice of fractional sizes.
Choose a Sovereign if you want a harder wearing 22 carat coin, a smaller unit value for selling in stages, and access to one of the deepest secondary markets in the world.
Many clients hold both. If you are not sure, tell us your budget and your timeframe and we will talk it through.
