St George and the dragon

2024 St George and the dragon

PCGS Graded/Certified 1oz Gold Coin MS66-70

The epic battle between Saint George and the Dragon has been a staple of mythology and of British coinage for hundreds of years. According to the story, the dragon initially demanded tribute from a village, when they ran out of livestock and valuables they began offering a human sacrifice each year. This arrangement was tolerable for the villagers until a princess was selected as the next offering. At this point Saint George intervened, rescuing the princess and slaying the dragon.

This coin marks the start of new series of St George and the Dragon coins from the Royal Mint. This first design by Jody Clark sees the knight driving his lance into the body of the beast which cowers below his rearing horse. The obverse of this coin uses the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

PCGS Graded/Certified 1oz Gold Coin MS66-70

The 2024 Tudor Dragon 1oz gold coin is the fifth bullion release in the Royal Tudor Beasts Collection from The Royal Mint. The collection features the 10 ‘Beasts’ statues that line the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court and which represent the families of the King’s line.

Designed by David Lawrence, the reverse side of the coin features the Tudor Dragon adopted by Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII) when raising an army against Richard II in preparation for the Battle of Bosworth field. This design is not only for visual appeal but also has enhanced security features as a protection against counterfeiting. The obverse side of the coin presents the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

The dragon was used as a heraldic symbol, representing power, strength, and authority. It’s origins can be traced back to Welsh mythology, where dragons were often depicted as powerful and fearsome creatures. The Tudors, who had Welsh ancestry, adopted the dragon as a symbol to emphasize their connection to Wales and to convey their authority as rulers.
